Dana Sbeity’s path to becoming a leader in the energy sector began with a curiosity for technology and problem-solving from a young age. Her passion grew during her undergraduate studies in electrical engineering, eventually leading her to pursue a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering. This journey allowed Dana to delve deep into energy systems, uncovering the pressing need for sustainable solutions in the face of climate change.
In 2016, she stepped into the solar sector with a clear vision: to make a meaningful impact through renewable energy. Dana recalls that the early challenges she faced, such as gender biases and technical hurdles, only fueled her determination. “I was driven by a desire to contribute to a more sustainable future,” she says. Over the years, she has played a pivotal role in various solar projects spanning industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, refining her skills and expanding her expertise.
Now, as the General Manager of GP Stellar and Head of Solar in Africa, Dana is at the forefront of advancing solar PV projects in Lebanon and West Africa. Her work with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) has been instrumental, providing her with a platform for continuous learning and professional development. "The energy sector’s potential to drive sustainable solutions continues to inspire me," she shares. "I look forward to contributing to a brighter, more sustainable future."
Dana acknowledges that being a woman in the energy sector has come with its share of challenges. “Gender stereotypes and biases are prevalent,” she explains. Yet Dana's strategy has always been to counter these obstacles by demonstrating technical expertise and professionalism. “I’ve earned respect by proving my knowledge and skills,” she asserts, noting that mentors and allies who champion gender equality have been crucial to her journey.
One of the significant hurdles is the lack of female representation in leadership roles. This pushed Dana to actively network with other women in the industry and engage in organizations like AEE. She also sees herself as a role model, offering mentorship and support to younger women entering the field. Her efforts are geared toward creating a more inclusive environment, where women can thrive and lead. “Persistence and self-advocacy have been key to overcoming barriers,” she says, highlighting her commitment to fostering a culture of empowerment.
For Dana, leadership in the energy sector is about much more than guiding teams; it's about inspiring and empowering them. "Leadership involves setting a clear vision and creating an environment of trust, collaboration, and innovation," she explains. A leader must be adaptable, ethical, and committed to continuous improvement.
Dana believes that effective leadership requires technical expertise, vision, and resilience. She emphasizes the importance of fostering creativity, encouraging innovation, and maintaining clear communication with teams and stakeholders. “It’s about empowering others, recognizing their strengths, and supporting their growth,” she adds, highlighting the value of mentorship and advocating for diversity. Dana’s leadership philosophy aligns with her broader mission to drive sustainable practices and foster a diverse, inclusive industry.
One of Dana’s most significant achievements is her work in South Lebanon, where she led a transformative solar project. In collaboration with local partners, she installed a 180 kW solar water system for a village, ensuring a reliable water supply for the entire community. This system also provided electricity to several houses when water wasn’t needed, creating a dual benefit for the village.
Her team expanded the project, installing solar systems for over 100 households, amounting to 1.2 MW with 1.4 MWh of storage, along with two private solar pumping systems of 400 kW. This effort came during a period of severe diesel shortages in Lebanon, making renewable energy a lifeline for the community. “By providing a reliable and renewable energy source, we reduced the village’s dependence on scarce and expensive diesel,” Dana reflects. The project not only improved the quality of life but also set a model for sustainable development in rural areas.
Dana sees the energy sector as ripe with opportunities for innovation and growth. “The expansion of renewable energy, especially solar and wind, is just the beginning,” she says. Advances in technology are making renewables more efficient and affordable, driving their adoption worldwide. Energy storage, smart grids, and the electrification of transport and industry are crucial to the future of energy, according to Dana.
She is particularly excited about the potential of green hydrogen and decentralized energy systems, which can empower communities and increase energy security. "The future of energy will focus on sustainability and diversity," she asserts, predicting a diverse energy mix that includes renewables, bioenergy, and advanced storage solutions. Dana is optimistic about the ongoing transformation of the energy sector, driven by innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to ethical practices.
Dana’s vision for the future of energy revolves around sustainability and inclusivity. She envisions a world where renewable energy dominates, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and leading to a cleaner, more resilient planet. She advocates for decentralized energy systems that empower communities and ensure equitable access to clean energy.
As a leader, Dana is committed to driving change not only through technological advancements but also by fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce. She believes that diversity in the energy sector leads to better decision-making, innovation, and long-term success. “We must prioritize ethical and responsible practices,” she emphasizes, confident that the energy industry can balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
Dana’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence, innovation, and leadership in overcoming obstacles and driving sustainable change. Her contributions to the energy sector have already left a significant mark, and she continues to lead with a clear vision for a greener, more inclusive future.
